As Americans have gotten fatter, clothing manufacturers in recent decades have altered clothing sizes, so the corresponding size numbers today are bigger garments than then. So for a woman? who would naturally fit into a 1951 size 12, a 2012 size 12 would fit her like a tent.

I always wondered why Lucy didn't just re-size the custom to fit her instead? of losing weight. That would have been easier and more Lucy-sneaky to me but then the point of the episode wouldn't of been as funny and ironic I guess haha
