It's clear that the reason why they are not as affected by the recession is not because of interest, rather the goods that they? sell. Oil is their source of huge amounts of wealth, that is the only reason why they are doing well, if you take oil away from them their economy would collapse. That's not true at all. If the economy grinds to a halt because of austerity, then you are far worse off than some inflation. Inflation is painful, but inflation doesn't stop a country. Imagine if all of Greece was suddenly jobless and goods stopped being produced. You would then have both inflation AND an additional economic crisis. That is an extreme, but any amount of austerity measures moves the economy towards that direction. It isn't the only option, but? it is a bad option in comparison.

correct me if I'm wrong, but in the hypothetical situation, I think Greece would be much better paying off their debts first before spending on entitlement obligations. as Sal? said in the earlier part of the video, Greece owes a shit ton of cash in Euros. intentionally causing inflation in the economy like that will weaken the Drachma with respect to the Euro and thus more Drachmas are needed to exchange for Euro in order to pay back the debt which doesn't solve shit.

That's why the Greeks have to do austerity right now because if they don't the problem will be worse in the future when they default and any bondholder, government retiree, etc. (whomever the Greek government owes money to) gets pennies on the dollar. So, I think I agree with you that since there is no? real free market capitalism in Greece or here in the U.S. any austerity measures really hurt the economy because the 2 governments have too big a 'market share' of their respective economies.

This video does a good job of explaining whats going wrong in the Greece but I don't buy the premise that it's political suicide to do some austerity measures if you show that default would result in? a much worse situation for Greeks. No. Printing more money to get out of debt is a bad solution. It leads to destruction of currency. If Greece had Drachma (not Euro) and it could not pay its debt, then the best solution would be default on debt i.e. pay say 10 cents on a dollar. So the banks? who loaned to Greece would lose 90% of their loans because the loan went bad. At least the citizens of Greece will not see a hyper-inflation. Their savings will continue to retain value.

Also, Greece would not be as dependent on foreign investors anymore as it would be able to print its own money and finance itself. ? If Gov't jobs accounted for a large % of Greece's GDP & now their Gov't is broke, then the logical conclusion is that Gov't jobs have to go away in favor of more productive ones. Now that would mean a severe recession at a minimum, but sometimes it just has to happen for your own good. U just can't avoid the pain.? As far as GDP goes, most of it is driven by spending which isn't always a good thing esp. when u overspend (the U.S.). Pure austerity is the right thing IM

Now with the decrease in income from investments (treat income as output-> GDP) the household can't continue it's lavish lifestyle with 1000 tv channels and that new BMW that's all being used on credit because the salaryman thought the investment would cash in. No, All of the US's imports are brought with foreign currency. the step by step process is: someone wants to by something online for (lets say) 1000JPY (Japanese Yen). that costs approximately $12.50 the buyers bank will deduct $12.50 from the buyers account. the bank will then use that $12.50 and buy 1000JPY. the bank will then transfer that 1000JPY to the Sellers bank? account. the seller will then send his product to you. so all import transactions are done with foreign currencies.

But basically, Yes. the net result is that China? will own most of the US treasury, and the US will own plastic junk. but don't worry, just because China owns a lot of American debt doesn't mean China will start to control the US. Sorry it wasn't my? intention to sound conceited. The thing is, in France, Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics are taught in high school, if you are in the "science" course (and most students are). Art history is an option, i didn't take it :-) I'm not saying it's better in any way than another educational system. It's just very different. I didn't realize it when i posted my first comment.

Small mistake. Lebron specifically asked for the "odds" of making 10 free throws in a row. To calculate the odds, you must divide the probability of making 10 free throws in a row by the probability of NOT making 10 free throws in a row. Or simply, p/(1-p) - where p is the probability of? making 10 free throws in a row. Thus, the answer would really be, (.06)/(1-.06)=.064 = 6.4%. Negligible, but the correct answer. Finding the "odds" is different than finding the "probability."

It has become painfully obvious that I am talking with a complete amateur. If the underlying principles of liquidity preference are wrong, then what benefit will you derive from some advance mathematical model of it?? Illustrating complex processes is the only function models serve in economics but you have to get the fundamental economic relationships correct first. Trust me, I have forgotten more economics than you will probably ever know. You aren't even familiar with basic terms.

Do you not realize that all these Keynesian models really only give a "scientific" sounding justification for the economic policies of mercantilism? How can you possibly say that these models are accurate when the only economists who have actually made accurate predictions are the ones who? detest foolish attempts of modeling human action?

On the off chance that you are even 1% serious, look: 1950's "solutions" to 1930's economics "problems" are ridiculous--the world has changed, and--thankfully--has our understanding of economics; Hazlitt rejects testability because he didn't like being proved wrong? and he pretty much rejected all mathematical modeling, which was just plain stupid, because, as Khan demonstrates, it's pretty darn accurate. Please try to learn something next time.
