Microsoft on the other hand is internally fragmented and has no mandate? to make user experience a priority. They only care about obtuse goals like market share and gross units exported. They have never, ever cared about the user (or programmer) experience. All you have to do is read their own specifications and then look at their code. Their own code doesn't follow their own standards and their documentation is written by summer interns who have never even heard of good design principles.

Your bias is showing. Apple puts the user first; everything a computer does is specifically for the user. They may be wrong in their design decisions sometimes, e.g. they have yet to make a good two button mouse, but they have learned one very important lesson: be? brave enough to design good things and have a common design goal.

But you're wrong when you say beauty, and hence good design, is *purely* subjective. There are things? that "look better" to humans like odd numbers of things vs. even numbers of things. But I would agree there is a lot of art involved in good design and something someone things is beautiful others might find repulsive. Good design isn't about rigidly following a book of rules though is it? It's understanding things we've found to be agreeable over time and then knowing how to break those rules.

For instance when the non-representative abstract movement started it was panned by art critics as not being "real art." The problem with evolution not addressed in your video comes from moving it from a verifiable? observation, to a list of added assertions. Great point, we? actually look at the science and data involved. Mind you in the area of art you have to look at the money behind it and that's usually a pretty good indicator of whether there is real talent. Most pop singers have their voices digitally enhanced to the point they can't sing on stage. Also the US is on a decline in many ways but there is hope we can make it better.

This is an interesting video about an interesting phenomenon, but I do think that on some levels it's possible to point out areas, particularly in the arts, where there actually has been a decline in quality. Not as a matter of "do you like? this art/music" but as a matter of actual skill: modern pop songs often repeat the same note as the "melody," as opposed to arranging a variety. (US) Education standards have also slipped. How can we distinguish perceived decline vs. actual decline?
