This one, I must admit, was very? well done!
By: Mr1700. on 15 Jan 11, 06:48:42
so no regulation. well they lobby because they want to make profit at the expense of the consumer. no regulation means no reigns. they have to lobby in order to make regulation as obsolete as possible. if there lobbying is bad then they must have bad intentions. why would you have no regulation on? someone who is for profit with no concern for peoples well being?

Why does the drug industry lobby congress? Because congress creates laws regulating the drug industry. Why does congress create laws regulating the drug industry? Because morons like this guy think people need the government to make us safe. What are drug companies really after? They are lobbying for a piece of the pie govt has taken and wants to dole out in the name of consumer protection. This means that the lobbying? you hate so much is a direct result of your stupid policies!!

dumbest person alive, no perspective? on anything

I'm truly against the idea of marxism. As much of a liberal as I am there are certain parts of capitalism that I like. It's hard to motivate people to be innovative and to work hard if everyone makes the same thing. What's the point of being a engineer if you make the same as a garbage man (no offense any garbage men out there). The lure of profit entices people to learn new skills and come up with new ideas and innovation. How Russia competed as long as it did is beyond? me.
By: boorens18. on 24 Mar 10, 02:37:37
its hard, cuz even if you ban corporations from contributing...they just start charities/front groups and fund them from there.?
By: satyrartist. on 01 Nov 09, 02:11:52
this is an EXCELLENT example of how lobbying works &how we need to control it!? It can't be eliminated - sometimes it's form of representation is necessary. For groups like people with disabilities, or engineering concerns, or even the NRA , they have the right to petition the government with how their needs may be important for "the People". But when the money gets involved the slime starts to ooze. Maybe legally limiting Lobbies to the same number as representatives. Something has to be done.

do we have to choose between two extremes or can we balance in between, are we not smart enough to come up with a 21st century system or are we? stuck with 19th century systems and/or even earlier style systems? capitalism,...socialism, how about something new!!!!
By: tmagdahl. on 26 Oct 09, 11:28:36
I can imagine how depressing it is to see how things do not work as expected. USA is a great country and socialism is definitively not? the answer imho. The free market is the best resource allocator and those things that go out of bound have to be regulated and the law applied. Can not imagine that it isn't against the law that a politician decides to defend the interest of a minority of itīs voters to make himself and them richer at the expense of the rest. And it is done in the open, not hiding!
By: tomitstube. on 26 Oct 09, 05:39:40
well you're right of course, seems to be a repeat of the robber baron era that lead to? the depression. besides, capitalism, especially in it's current state is doomed. with us approaching 7 billion in population with dwindling resources, the only possible solution is a democratic socialism. the era of take what you want without consequences is over. there has to be common good that outweighs 20th century biblical capitalism or the individual cowboyism america enjoyed. it's over.
By: m22k3yt. on 26 Oct 09, 05:10:52
Plutonomy is the new term given to our new "democracy". Its so unfortunate? that these companies are getting away with robbing the money of the lower and middle classes. This is probably the time the U.S. should consider Socialism in its pure form (Marxism). The reason why so many older people (Baby Boomers) are hesitant about Socialism is because the U.S. has connotated it to that other 'evil government' during the Cold War.

Regarding "gilbet's" comment "stealing the invention away " I would like to point out that defining the protection time is in no way stealing and 20 years is no magical number for everything and for always. That they play under that rule is also a proof that it is atractive (5 years). Regarding "sweat of others" I would? say the sweat is compensated with the salary. The novel idea is what has to be rewarded so they keep on searching and motivated.
By: tomitstube. on 26 Oct 09, 00:21:14
wow, that was completely depressing. we are truly a corpocracy. our elected officials are bought and paid for. they are handing out monopolies to the highest bidder. capitalism is on borrowed time in this country. the top 1% owns 95% of the wealth now, yet financial power keeps shrinking to even less people. this is not a democracy by any stretch of the imagination. our government has become a money grabbing machine? with little virtue or integrity.
By: snoop11080. on 25 Oct 09, 20:52:38
how can anyone expect obama to make things better when are country is ran? like this
By: tmagdahl. on 25 Oct 09, 20:44:34
Once a time limit is set,it is law and it has to be respected and enforced. Before it is set, it is Ok to give it a deep look and balance the ethical issue of health and the requirement that the pharma industry has fair rewards (not obscene rewards). 20 years is only a number and it is not the result of a smart formula and you can question it. Health should not be only for the richer ones. Less than 20 does not mean? you will kill the pahrma industry. They have to innovate in drugs and costs too.
By: tmagdahl. on 25 Oct 09, 20:31:31
2/2.I can buy a generic? drug,28 pills for 2 bucks or buy them from a fancy lab for 30 bucks.I understand the protection time is over! Why?Because there are goods where people fall under the "price effect".If the price is higher and I can not measure the quality objectively I get the impression that the most expensive one is the best. Some of us rationalize this for les critical drugs and buy generics, but in general after protection is over you can still cream the market due to this odd behavior.
By: tmagdahl. on 25 Oct 09, 20:18:00
1/2. When somebody invents a shaving scheme that is novel and for historical reasons he has 20 years of protection I can agree with it easily. You decide if you really need it or not and the price will be the factor. When it is about peoples health they do not say "I don't need it" when the price is to high. They need it anyway, so in some sense the price can be? put very high and they will pay it at the risk of bankruptcy. How do you balance price determination with that urge for health?
By: tmagdahl. on 25 Oct 09, 19:59:40
My argument was how to determine the protection time form "chemical drugs" to "bio drugs". It seems that the 5 years have created an industry that is so happy with the "deal" that they are willing to protect it with all the lobby and bribing they do. The biggest concern should be to make those 5 years effective going after other countries legislations where that can not be enforced, instead of trying? to make people of the US pay for those losses only because it is easier.
By: gilbet. on 25 Oct 09, 17:19:39
After twenty years, a drug is no longer a new invention, so that is why generics should be allowed after 20? years. But allowing generics before then is effectively stealing the invention away from those who created it. I don't understand how people can feel entitled to products created by the sweat of others. You're swiping the reward away from the people who earned it. It's like stealing tomatoes from your neighbor's garden.
By: tmagdahl. on 25 Oct 09, 14:53:39
Why estimate/determine the patent time for the bio drugs when that industry is? just figuring things out? Let them start with 5 years and if they do not perform well it could be increased, but not based on "bribes"! Just now there is no interest in showing optimal cost or estimate the lowest possible cost of development, because the goal is to get as much years as possible and then work the cost as low as possible to maximize the gain.
By: tmagdahl. on 25 Oct 09, 14:30:29
Is there a big difference when a drug cartel buys a judge than a company buying a congress member? Do not get fooled that the difference is that the "buyer" is an illegal organization or not! The similarity is that? a power of the political system is being corrupted. The news is the "fourth" power and we already got accustomed that they get easily biased/bought but this should not be ok for the remaining three powers.
