The people behind "Pen and Teller" are only for or against? a topic if it will capture an audience's attention. Don't take it too serious. It is just a fun entertaining show to help pass the time. It would be nice if more things could be recycled off for a little extra cash. Car batteries and metal is all recycling businesses will pay for. I haven't seen any business wanting to buy paper or plastic. It takes too much copper to make it a worth-while venture.

You're missing the point of recycling. There's a? reason that it's listed in this order: reduce, reuse, recycle. You're trying to reduce the amount of space we have to take up to store garbage. It's not an infinite resource like we want to believe.

Recycling paper includes:Sorting, pickup with truck, dropping off paper at facility, processing at a different facility, bleaching, repackaging, shipping finished product out. Producing paper from scratch (from tree harvesting farms): Plowing a field, planting trees, giving time to grow, taking big machinery to chop down, labor, loading trucks with trees and shipping to facility, processing at facility, packing and shipping out finished product. I have been doing some serious recycling the last 8 months. For example 6 tons of paper in one trip. I think that most of what is said in this video is incorrect or? like others have said lacks data to back up what they say. Penn agrees that aluminum cans are worth while to recycle. So, when they were talking about recycling they were mostly referring to paper and plastic bottles. Lets compare the costs of recycling paper and the costs of making paper from scratch....(see next message)

Basically, what I got from this episode was that we should avoid recycling, say fuck the planet, YOLO, use it til' it's gone because it costs less. Can anyone clarify that for me? I doubt I that it is more expensive to recycle. In india recycling isn't subsidized, the government does nothing to promote it and guess what the recycling is still a profitable business. recyclers even? pay people to take their waste.recycling costs less. if it costs more in your country something else is wrong - hint ....think labour cost.

Some materials may become cheaper to recycle rather than produce from scratch as we run out of them. For example LCD screens contain several rare metals (eg Indium), and our known reserves of them are extremely limited. So while perhaps just aluminium and a few other materials are cost-effective to? recycle now, over time I expect more will be. Also as green fuels continue to develop, the equations on production pollution will change too, which may make recycling of some materials less pollutant.

Same place we've always gotten them. What part of this are you not understanding... it takes MORE energy to recycle plastic than it does to create new material. And most of our energy comes from hydrocarbons. Recycling? wastes energy and a LOT of money. We're using MORE to get LESS. Which is pretty much the exact opposite of what 'green' philosophy supposedly advocates. It's absurd that such BS has been allowed to even get this far. Recycling makes people 'feel' better, and thats it.

Ok, so perhaps recycling paper is stupid, perhaps even plastic, but metals are not renewable, so even if it is cheaper to mine them, we are going to run out some time, even though it is not right around the corner would it not be easier to sort it then, than to begin mining these landfills? I think they make a good point, but the only really look at paper.? It might be cheaper to get plastic and metal from the source, but if that source is not renewable, it is not sustainable in the long run.
