Just what we need, another buzz word ... You limit kids by not making them fluent in the three Rs. Teach a child to read and express him/herself with good grammar, and make him/her numerate. There's your grounding for everything else. He aint WRONG, but he doesn't really have anything useful to say. Siegfrieg Engelmann has taken education to the level of a SCIENCE with Direct Instruction (DI), and hardly anyone knows or cares. Michel Thomas's language lessons use the same principles of design as DI to make em work 100 times more efficiently than any other language learning program out there. Engelmann and Michel Thomas both? have (had) critical marketing failures, but if you want to fix education, LOOK TO THEM!

I'm so glad I live in a country where I don't need to buy a diploma. I have always loved school and I still love studying languages and literature at? uni. And sir Ken Robinson is brilliant. I feel like high school needs to better prepare students for their future. I am halfway through college right now and some of my friends literally have no idea what they want to do? with their lives. They haven't even declared a major yet. I feel like, if high schools helped us prepare for what we want to do, we wouldn't have this problem. Pseudo-Intellectual discussion is not the direction for an undergrad obviously. There is a framework which includes general study and a liberal arts ed in the first two years of university. This provides a basic framework for learning. You can't learn much of any value by naval gazing. Stimulation? is exploring within a framework. You should have been googling & doing research to be verified while at school. Group lead teaching is for those who aren't bright enough.. to take in a lecture..

I dropped out of University after 1/2 year for same reasons, although I wasn't paying for my education. I was being paid a scholarship. I actually care tons more about science and stuff now than I did before. And I think the future of education is in science/tech informational and (other than that) educational (how-to)? videos. Besides all that, I think in current state teachers should all be voted for/against by students annually to keep the bad ones away. This is plain democratic obviousness.

I know it may not be 'correct' to say so, but? as a High School teacher I always punish misbehaviour in a socially-aware manner. It's all to do with the way they've been brought up. It makes perfect sense to me to hand out a lighter range of punishments to wealthier, middle class kids- their parents' shame & disapproval is usually harsh enough punishment. I don't think the goal of this video was to promote a teacher-less classroom. Right now especially, technology (and the internet, primarily) can be used to *help* teachers. I know my school uses these things called "Gizmos" on ExploreLearning, and they just reinforce lessons that teachers have already presented to the class. It is also meant to show how class discussion and the student's? ability to bounce ideas off of peers can be a fantastic learning tool if harnessed correctly.

Its important to look at the over all cost here. One laptop can reasonably last u? 5 years, if not longer, so over the course of a ten year school cycle ull need 2 laptops. On the other hand without it ull need books every year, pencils and paper every week and all kinds of other instruments. Looking at the big picture the laptops are quite a bit cheaper.

This video is really quite ignorant, it says that children can't learn in such circumstances. However, my school is quite similar, my classmates seem to be fine with it, they get A's if they try hard enough. Similarly, if you want to change it, then wait your turn, if you want these changes, then wait until you get a job with education and work your way up the ranks, it's very much different if you complain about it to the decision maker. A revolution of the current system to something presented by? the video would encompass changes much greater than what you can actually see by the video. Curriculum would need to be looked at; "What should we be learning?" In particular, the division of classes would need to be looked at too. Why do we divide people by age and force them through the same regimen, when some need, some don't. Classes based on ability and interests are more useful. And if you need a break, take one.

The ethical validity of IP laws is questionable. Most kids have no respect for IP, but they don't have lobby groups. If only they did. Universities are centers of progress in many fields, but ARE held back by law. I can honestly say what I just watched is appalling. By the way, memorizing the multiplication tables? and knowing how to find the lowest common denominator using primes (2,3,5,7,11,..) are the keys arithmetic. Unbelievable, they are using distribution laws to alter the algorithms. The reason they are teaching inferior methods is they want your child to fail. The government knows what material and methods to use. I can guarantee in the private schools the proper methods are being taught.

My daughter is bringing home Everyday Math and I thought oh how neat you learn everyday math right? Now I realize that the multiplication lattice they use is based on Chinese math. huh? I have a video titled "Calculus for 6th Graders" that dramatically simplifies the proofs behind "derivatives" and "integrals" ? giving students a much more profound appreciation for the geometry behind the math. I must admit those books are a bit of a joke. And I tend to do all my calculations on paper or in my head by breaking? the sums down into their individual parts. I find this works fairly well and quickly for multiplication but it is extremely slow when doing division, since then I have found long division to be a more suitable approach for division. In addition, I try to do as many calculations as possible in my head, or mentally avoiding the use of a calculator wherever possible. :)

It's obvious that math reformation has good intentions. Who wouldn't want? to make sure that their child is learning the best and most important mathematics to ensure a bright academic future (whether it contain heavy mathematics or not). The reasoning through problems is great; Richard Feynman would probably ensorse this approach! However, elementary school mathematics has to be made practical for kids to care, and we must teach them algorithms so that they have them in their back pocket later!

a few things 1) I use this technique they're calling reasoning all the time. If you do it enough, it easy, and you don't need paper. In the real world, I'd be hard pressed to even locate paper in my house, and I never have a pen. What I do have? is a phone, computer, laptop, and calculators all over the place. I do math all the time. It's probably been a decade since I didn't do it in my head or on a calculator because the standard algorithm is pretty crappy for doing math in your head.

In the future, give 'watching a video for comprehension' a try; it makes one quite a? bit less idiotic. Quite clearly @ 6:40(ish) in, she says that these other methods are wonderful 'teaching tools'. In other words, one uses many different methods to explain the abstract notion of how multiplication works, and then one presents an algorithm that is used for efficient resolution of problems. It is unwise to derive a solution from the fundamental theorem of arithmetic for every problem, forever.

For those who are defending Everyday Math and Investigations: In Asia (specially Korea/Japan), elementary/middle school classes can be up to 50 kids (usually 40), so teachers rarely help? individual students due to the large amount of students and time constrains. Yet, they are able to cope with the math simply because they have the basics down. Memorizing the multiplication tables and the standard algorithms help them in the future even if they don't get it at the moment.

No, I don't think kids should learn how to multiply and divide more than single digit numbers by the time they are in fifth grade. I think they should give them a damn calculator and teach them fucking Algebra. We could get everybody doing multidimensional calculus by the end of high school if we skipped the pointless exercise of? teaching long division or whatever this new BS is. Teaching in Finland was very thorough, very slow and relaxed, no stress, nobody ever rushes you to do anything, everybody can take their time. Apart from the government inspections and all what that means, schools in England are good: great ideas, lots of attention to the children. Great resources and modern teaching methods, and in a good school you get a lot of teacher support. Not enough music and singing, perhaps? :-). Finnish kids eat much healthier school dinners, as well.

I'm a teacher? in England now, but I had some of my teacher training at a Finnish university. The biggest difference to me is that here it's all about government inspections, observing, constantly setting-achieving targets otherwise some funding might get withdrawn. All the teaching focuses on the exams from day 1, not on what the pupils actually need. I have to constantly provide "evidence of learning", spend my time doing paperwork, 4/5 training sessions will be on pprwrk and not teaching.
