Timothy Dalton was more parody I? think, more Rochester than Edward Rochester himself ;-) Toby Stephens is a much better actor. I have watched most of the screen adaptions and I think I would have liked Timothy Dalton on stage. On the screen, however, he just made me laugh. That is not a matter of complain. I am just reading the book and wll discipline myself not to spoil the end for me by looking the film episodes too fast. Ruth Wilson is great. But don't you think that they shortened the book too much? Jane wanted to go to school to escape their horrible relations and landed in a? sort of asylum. And in the book she broke a slate, so she draw the attention of Mr. B. The whole awful drill in this institution is not shown here, I think....

- I hate Brocklehurst too; audiences aren't supposed to like him, especially with the way he mistreats the pupils of Lowood at every turn (although all the movie adaptations have him being far more of a tyrannical presence than in the novel). And also in the novel, an offhandedly-mentioned girl is "guilty" of having naturally curly hair, whereas the "vain" curly-haired girl in the movies is always? Helen (which is why Jane is punished for protesting over Helen's hair getting cut).

Have you read the Tenant of Wildfel Hall? Written by Anne. She is, I guess, the least famous of? the Brontë sisters, but an equally talented writer. You are missing the point. Jane Eyre is an epic book about human suffering and good people who overcome it. Class is hardly mentioned in the novel, and is clearly not of much interest to Charlotte Bronte who sees good and bad in all. Pride and Prejudice is the opposite. Austin finds tells us? that the richer a person the better they are, and of course the reverse applies. She is obsessed with position and judges people accordingly. Please do not let Kiera Knightley anywhere near Jane Eyre!

So many things are cut from adaptations, they're never very close to the? original. The 2011 version is very short, it went through her childhood very quickly, and there's not enough time to get to know the characters, or really see why they love each other.

I like the miniseries versions better than the films, which have to be shortened and simplified for time's sake. But? this was a decent film version. I find it amusing to see how many versions have pretty people for roles that aren't supposed to be pretty. Mr. Rochester shouldn't look like Timothy Dalton! At least this Rochester looks the part, though the American accent is distracting.

I did too. I loved this version. The acting was wonderful. I think that Jane Eyre is the greatest novel ever written. It is difficult to do wrong in making it into a movie, as the story is so poignant. I love the actress who played Jane in this. She is wonderful. Chorlotte Bronte? was a true genius to produce this masterpiece. Jane Eyre will always be recreated in movies. It is a true genuine story of human goodness, not pretentious class ridden rubbish like "Pride and Prejudice".

The whole "complex" ot the 1983 BBC production makes it so unique. A film need not be 100% faithful to the novel in order to be EXCELLENT. This "faithfulness" to the novel cannot be and isn't the only or most important criterion. THere are so many others: the? choice of scenery, the music selected to accompany the scenes, the selected "chain of episodes" elected from the novel in order to make a story that delivers the spirit of the novel, the cast, the whole of it, let alone the main roles

No one is supposed to go "against" mainstream opinion as far as works of art are concerned.......there are more rigid "professional"? criteria for judging such works, and, then there's the personal sensation, one's "inner voice". I, personally, am IN LOVE with the 1983 version, and I've seen ALL VERSIONS, but, as I've said, it's more than anything else, a matter of personal taste. I agree,I don't know why so many people don't like this version,they say there's no passion.But I think Jane is made like a character who knows her own sufferings and feelings and keeps them in herself.? I love this version because both of them are not sooo handsome,and with that they seem real.The actors from 2006 version are way too pretty and seem like from a Jane Austen novel.....

Yeah, maybe you're right. But I actually like the modernized versions. I think it makes it easier to relate to the characters. On the other hand, I'd say that Bronte novels are quite different from most of the novels of the victorian era. They? differ because their characters are more "human". I still have to read Shirley and Agnes Grey, though.

Why do movies about the 19.th century often seem to try to make all the characters look? severe all the time? They're so much passion in this scene in the novel! Yet the actors all have their feelings under control. I like the 2006 version best. Stephens and Wilson give quite a playful interpretation of the characters.

I love all the people on here who watch Jane Eyre ect. Everybody else is annoying and insulting. If you say something they don't agree with, they call you stupid and cuss? you out. On here, everyone is so nice! They ask kindly and polity to elaborate. I guess it shows the levels of maturity levels of people who are interested in different things.

I really do love this version over all others...but the 2011 version does have one thing the others have not...it is more of the "haunting" atmosphere than any other and I love that. ? My fav scene is her "day dream" of Rochester finding her after she ran away :)

Okay, "fatal" is probably a bit of a dramatic way to put it,? but there are many references to Jane being kept and held like a trapped bird and this was the moment she refused to be thought of as such, so the essence was not lost but the nuance was. Still it's my favourite portrayal of this scene.

i agree, i feel the acting was less dramatic and more real, it focused less on showing and more on internal conflicts. This scene in the 2011 version was a lot more powerful bc it doesnt only play with jane weeping but the anger, frustration and restlessness are more evident and real. I love that version...Its hard for me to watch something without analyzing the acting and the 2011 adaptation made me forget i was watching a movie. Also it was incredibly beautiful, aesthetically? speaking

True, this scene has been greatly condensed but, IMO, it's? abridgement isn't detrimental. I still feel that it's totally convincing. In what way is skipping the bird reference fatal? After R tells her not to struggle, Jane replies "I'm a free person and I will come and go as I please." The characters aren't so bound to Bronte's (admittedly beautiful) dialogue that they fail to capture the spontaneity and immediacy that the scene demands onscreen. All my opinion, of course!

One of the closest to the book's portrayal of Rochester imo, physically at least. I really don't like Jane though, too whiny for me. She? plays well but imo her face and voice just don't work, she just doesn't look like Jane to me. Still, pretty damn good adaptation.
