During this bit of the live performance, we all think, "oh god here comes that line, here comes this soliloquy. How is the actor going to do it this time?" It gets tiresome ha. Don't bother with the Julianne Moore version, it's crap. Beckett was involved in the direction of this performance, I seem to recall, and Billie Whitelaw was definitely his favourite actress. Exactly. I agree with you when you say there was never any intention to confuse or misinform. However, I don't think the purpose of the work was intended to be so malleable as you seem to? believe. Beckett, of all playwrights, was very particular in how his works were to be preformed. That could only suggest that, to him, the "meaning" of the work was very specific too.

YES I agree. Hamlet is maturing in age, but in heart? and mind he is still struggling. He is both a child and an adult, a little prince perhaps, not ready to be a king. If? you take the themes of inactivity and the oppression of the 1st generation to the 2nd generation that are so prevalent in the story of Hamlet, it really works better for Hamlet to be a younger character. Aside from his line readings, his "acting" so to speak, what I find astonishing is his realization of the soliloquy as a piece of film. He probably would have played it quite differently in a stage performance. Here the camera [that is, the viewer] climbs to the highest turret in the castle, sees the waves crashing below, thinks of jumping, and enters Hamlet's brain from behind. Also very strong use of the knife. A? movie must show us, not merely tell us. Olivier accomplishes this quite daringly.

I disagree. It is an angry speech. Hamlet is wanting death but his fear of death holds him back so he is pissed. Hamlet should only be sad when he says "lose the name of action." Here? he is despondent because he was wanting death but he is afraid of the "undiscovered country."

Gibson is probably crazy. However, Hamlet was also crazy. I suppose this is why Gibson does Hamlet well. I would like to see an actor shout out "...no more..." when referring to death. Every actor I have seen always speaks this like quietly, like they? are in awe of death. I see Shakespeare making Hamlet as wanting death so he should shot NO MORE! This is my version.

I like Tennant's also, but if this was me I'd be dismayed and pissed! Mel really puts that into it, as you've said. I just received The RSC's version with Tennant but haven't had a chance to watch it yet.? The soliloquy is a small part and I'm holding off on judging until I can watch the whole play. They both give different interpretations to the speech. David Tennant's is more about suicide. I subscribe to this interpretation. Mel Gibson gets somewhat angry near the end, which I do not understand; this doesn't seem to? be an angry speech. I agree, Mel Gibson's performance if full of emotion but it is the wrong emotion.
