There are so many advantages to reading that words don't even do it justice... it's something you would have to experience to understand. I'm going to try these tricks. My BIG problem is I ALWAYS get tired and even fall asleep while reading. After reading for a short time the words start blending together and it seems as though I'm just reading the words with no meaning behind them. Jim, I just wanted to say thank you for your book, The Read-Aloud? Handbook. It's one of the best non-fiction books I have ever read. Because of your selfless writing my wife and I read prolifically to our now five-year-old daughter and going into Kindergarten this fall she is a fluent reader. While that's nice, more importantly we wouldn't trade the time we've spent reading to her (read: being with her) for anything. The thoughts in your book helped make that a reality. I can summarize it for you. The idea is that most people unnecessarily use their Larinex,? a speech muscle, while reading. To read faster, you have make sure you aren't silently speaking the words with this muscle. He says that 125-250 words per minute is the average. He claims if you read any faster than 250 wpm, you are already bypassing the Larinex for some words. To train yourself to read without your Larinex, he recommends saying random letters/numbers out loud while you read.
