This, so far, is the most balanced and well-argued video of all the RSA videos. In quite a few of them, despite making excellent points or delivering a potent and powerful message, the speaker would have a tendency to make misleading/false over-generalizations. That would be case if capitalism was intrinsically bad, which is not. It's not perfect either, and this is were regulation and laws are implemented to (in theory) try? to fix the imperfections. And so poverty is not intrinsically related to capitalism exploitation. Many times it's due to corrupt governments, social-political movements or laws which isolate a group of people, discrimination, exploitation (regardless of economical structure), charity is not really directly related to any of these.

Whether your charity is smart or not, it still requires money, and that money is going to come directly (from people like Soros) or indirectly (from your charitable average Joe) from profits made by capitalist exploitation.? I also didn't like his tone when he referred? Toms shoes (i might be bias here). He stereotypes them by stating that they give shoes to "some African nation". Yeah they have given shoes to African Nations, but the founder's inspiration were shoeless kids in Argentina (and they have given to kids in United States). I believe undeveloped are undeveloped because they haven't got grip on free trade and rule of law. Even China could do much better with some human rights and less corruption. It is? the whole package - free trade and people. You cut one you cut both resulting in lesser prosperity. However there will always be some realms poorer than others. He aint WRONG, but he doesn't really have anything useful to say. Siegfrieg Engelmann has taken education to the level of a SCIENCE with Direct Instruction (DI), and hardly anyone knows or cares. Michel Thomas's language lessons use the same principles of design as DI to make em work 100 times more efficiently than any other language learning program out there. I had an epiphany similar to this a few years ago while traveling in Italy. While walking the streets in Florence, I kept seeing banners that said, "Pace" (pronounced pah-che) meaning peace, in English. Reflecting on its meaning, I thought of the same word? in the context of the English language. In English, "pace" refers to rhythm or some function of time. In no way would those who are future-oriented ride on the coattails? of those living in the present.? Take the Big Names in science and the arts, for instance: Opened up whole new fields, changed the way we live, usually for the better. I don't think they did that as a means to some future goal. I agree in a greater since of unity, but I think the individual? is still very important. Take for instance the Haiti example, yes if you look at it on a one-dimensional level, people acting in self interest would not give toward Haitian relief. Personally I? found this really interesting. This is why when I'm in a relationship/friendship with someone I always prefer to come right out and say what I mean. Ugh. Beating around the bush is my pet peeve. Thing is, what if the 'etchings' question is asked with no hidden motives? This kind of terminology relies on mutual knowledge between people of the subject matter. Nobody likes going to the dentist so obviously the comment will be interpreted as sarcastic. The extra inflection adds to? that interpretation but isnt necessary.I was commenting more on the use of sarcasm without that overexaggerated inflection and on a topic for which mutual knowledge isnt entirely agreed upon.The whole "Im so good at sarcasm people cant tell if Im serious or not" thing. ie, subtle sarcasm

My English? teacher in 9th grade introduced me to these videos, and I've been watching them ever since, and suggesting them to all of my friends. Some appreciate it more than others, but I think that RSA needs to get as much support as possible to continue making such amazing videos. The animate videos are nice for me, because I can see and read the ideas being lectured, so that some of these ideas can really sink in. These videos have given me SO much to think about daily. On another note I think these videos are meant to stimulate debate not to be rock solid pronouncements on the state of reality- think of it as a springboard for expanding your knowledge and see if you? can prove him wrong with scientific evidence if you feel you are correct. The Anna Sudstrom paper is about how perceptions of driving are related to reality not about the perceptions themselves- I sent you there because I thought you might be interested in the slightly tangential research. If the study was done well then personal definitions of average? will have been controlled for- psychologists are quite good at this now! Psychology research is a minefield I suggest you do some research and read carefully-abstracts are pretty useless I'm afraid.

I think most people assume that means do you think that you are better than most people at it. Does that sound reasonable? so the point that the study found was that 90% of people reckon they are better than most people at driving. The abstract for the Anna Sudstrom paper supports my postion, that various "studies" of "self-assessed" driving skills are full of probs rendering them rather useless, amongst those probs a diff between what the? respondent thinks is the defintion of 'average" and what the researchers have in mind. Don't you see the game? The researchers actually know that there will be defintional differences, and then they pretend not to know. Lying is so common that most humans lie about lying.

You're sure Indians are "wonderful" drivers? What a people-pleaser, cowardly choice of adjective. Why would you? say that, hmmm? You don't understand value-judgement - is "good" defined as skillful, even acrobatic vehicular handling? Or low accident rate? Or high courtesy ranking? If you are a Westerner, you would be too terrified to drive in India. The "relevance" is value-judgement - how a word is defined, and how different people have different defintions for a word due to value.
