A jesusly beautiful man, even with bad lip-synching. He sings the hell out of this one and there is? very little difference between this version and the one he sings ten years later. He is the best actor of all the operatic tenors of his time and knows that it is NOT ABOUT THE SINGING, but about telling the story. We are all hard-wired for story and need it to survive.

Good God! Domingo was Fabulous! Kabaivanska was? amazing, and Milnes has never been better... But the production was truly gripping and dramatic and comprehensible and believable. All of which made this the best Tosca I've ever seen. (Of course, I never saw Tebaldi & Del Monaco.)

Do you need a hearing aid? Ever heard of Mirella Freni? How old are you? How many recordings of Tosca did you ever hear? Gheorghiu is okay, but come on.... the best? LOL. That isn't a very professional statement. No one considers Alagna as a great tenor, because he is not. He is mediocre at best. In his generation there are? a handful better tenors. Jose Cura for example.

Hmm... I think that Dmitri Hvorovstovsky made the best (sounding) Scarpia, and I think Gheorghiu certainly earned her spot as best Tosca. But I always wonder why no one considers Alagna as very good.? I enjoy his singing! Is there any particular reason many think he's no good? (Not trying to start an arguement, I'm just curious and I always like discussing music)

The best Tosca? I do not think so. Sherill Milnes is the party blooper here. The? best Tosca is with Freni, Domingo & Ramey. Sinopoli is the conductor. There is no weakness in this performance. Samuel Rameys 'Te Deum' is just brilliant and Freni devine. This video is the number three Tosca, just after the Gheorghiu, Alagna & Ruggero Raimondi recording. Both have a weak spot. Sherril Milnes is a weak Scarpia here and Roberto Alagna a very weak Cavaradossi in my number two choice. Just saying...

True, both are unique. But Slatinaru is not a spinto, she was a romanian dramatic soprano, that`s why her low notes are "wide".:) Maria sings also a beautiful Gioconda-suicido, it`s also on youtube. Even if Slatinaru is a? better voice Fach for tosca, I prefer a little more angela` lyric voice, because it`s very hard to sing this as a lyric soprano... and she does it perfectly.

The technique is excellent! Very clean even if a bit darkened. But i always feel like she is not really IN when she sings. She is too cautious for my taste. Freni is really good in this aria. And she gets carried and she lets herself get carried and she is not scared to get carried. That's why i prefer her to gheorghiu's clean interpretation. The thing is i like singers that say : Look how pretty this music is. Not : Look how lovely i can sing. Off course? this IS great !

Hey, guess what? He is singing principle roles for the Royal Opera, and is a regular principle at the MET now. But you are right...? all of the scouts, producers and voice coaches involved with those multi-million dollar opera companies, who worked with the likes of Pavarotti and Dmitri Hvorostovsky, are totally wrong and have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to finding talent with proper technique. The bulging veins you supposedly see are negligible, and do not appear to me inordinate at all. Your prejudice is based on envy not sound intelligence in these remarks so dubiously spouted. "Bulging veins" are not an interpretive issue. The sky is blue, & Kaufmann's neck veins are? bulging in this clip. The neck veins bulge for the same reason veins bulge in any other part of the body: excessive effort. Liking a singer does not mean that you have to lie on their behalf, & we both know full well that his stretched tongue is not "perfect technique". You don't need "credibility" to see these things, only eyes.

There is indeed artistic truth, and it is very difficult to achieve.? It involves subtlety for one thing, contrary to this here specimen. As for Schwarzkopf, yes, she looks like a Nazi housewife in those lieder videos - but they are lieder, not opera which is primarily meant to be looked at. But Schwarzkopf's performance as the Marschallin was indeed quite good in Czinner's staging of 'Der Rosenkavalier' conducted by Karajan.

There's a little something to what you're saying. I think Callas a more superior artist than Sutherland, Callas's Tosca is undeniably the standard of today. But in this scene here, Sutherland understood full well Tosca's vulnerability, her fragility, whereas Callas sounded PO'd up? the ying yang. Sutherland is so breathtaking here. Her diction is atrocious, but I never bought that she was not much of an actress. She certainly was convincing here... & yes, all she had to do was sit!

Are you seriously suggesting that Callas had a better top than Sutherland? If so I suggest you book in? for an ear transplant! Callas' top notes were often piercing and unsteady. However both she and Joan were truly great! Also, Callas, Sutherland, Caballe, Pav, Domingo, et al, they all had to sing just one line and you knew who it was singing!

You are right, Sutherland had "perfect" notes, but she has not proper articulation and would not fit to kiss Callas' shoe tops when it comes to artistry. Bland singing. Pavarotti is not the only tenor with overtones. Hm, do you really think that Pavarotti is the most recognizable voice in the world? Have? you heard Martinelli, Gigli, Corelli or even Kaufmann to name a few? They are of more distinction than Big P.

Yuna Kim can definitely hold her own against Michelle Kwan- they're both excellent skaters. Personally, the first half of this performance wasn't that great for me. Yes, the spins were spot on, but there was very little artistic transitioning in between. It felt like she was just spinning then skating and waiting for the next spin. But the second half was? terrific. I like Yuna's style better, but again they're both great

I bet the two judges who didn't give her 6's for presentation needed armed guards just to get out of there alive :) Many athletes can execute technically, but few have ever performed with such passion and emotion as Kwan. One of the best performances by any athlete in any sport, period. I concur? with Mr. Button...this was magnificent!

I normally would concur with you in the same way it's ridiculous to compare every tenor? to Pavarotti when the voices are all kinds of sizes, weights, and colors. However, in this particular instance with Sandra Radvanovsky, the comparison is fair because the color and timbre of her voice DOES in fact have many similarities to Maria Callas.

I first heard Sandra Ravanovsky in 2004 in a San Diego production of Don Carlo and later that year in? an LA Opera production of Il Trovatore and I also was quite struck how Callas-esque her timbre was. I later asked David DiChiera, the General director of Michigan Opera Theatre if my assessment was accurate and he concurred.

Incredible how much a singer can change over the years. I am not talking about her appearance - happends to all women with time. Besides I never really enjoyed looking at her when she sang, because of the tortured faces she makes when she sings! But her voice always made up for it. Until now. (IMHO) her? voice deteriorated quite a lot. I heard her live in Trovatore and in Cyrano, and I must say she was one of my favourite singers. But, I guess, the time has not been nice to her.

I'm not a huge opera fan but I listen to a lot of Puccini. I like watching vidoes of those who are? no longer with us but I just don't understand all the "Callas did it better so this is shit". Callas is dead. Opera is a live medium. Radvanovsky is alive, well and exceedingly talented. She also has an impressive bosom. ;)
