We are all born breathing? diaphragmatically, lying down or standing up. There is no difference. The ONLY reason lying down causes you to breath diaphragmatically is because the chest & shoulders are locked out of rising. One can easily do that standing, even sitting. Diaphragm breathing has nothing to do with the stomach. It has to do with your lungs, the diaphragm and intercostal, core musculature. Lying down reinforces a desire to push the stomach muscles forward and that is simply incorrect.

Yeah but lying down is how you breath when you sleep and how your? breath when you sleep is the correct way,so if you train yourself to breath that was when your standing up you just have to have good posture and a hard stomach and you can breath right.... Idk lying down might not help some people but it helps me.

while that is true, to duplicate that natural movement standing is not as easy. So many coaches say "lie on your back to learn how to breath". The problem is: we don't sing lying on our backs and it teaches singers nothing. Cut out the middle man and learn how to breath diaphragmatically standing up.? Its not that difficult.

I guess the simple answer is this. When a baby is born, it uses the diaphragm really well with no instruction. Watch a baby's abdomen rise & fall as it sleeps. There are? many scientific videos online about how the diaphragm works, but I like to keep it simple. If you run for a bus, and begin to pant, you also use the diaphragm in this way too. Swimming, Singing, and playing a wind instrument are the only things that humans do where we have to control our airflow. Message me for Skype Lessons!

There should only be a minimal amount of rib movement although I say to my singers that they don't have to stand fixed like a soldier. The way I work with the body is getting them to concentrate of course on the diaphragm 1st, then to allow a little tiny? bit of movement in the ribs so that the person feels flexible. For contemporary singing this is fine, perhaps for legato phrases in classical, this would be a problem.

The butt tightening gets your? lower abdominal wall going as well, and when the lower abdominal wall is active in your singing, you get breath support. Breath support = easier singing.

It's really funny that people say she sucks, when in fact, she's a pretty solid lower mezzo-soprano, breaking? on alto given the strength of some of her lower notes. Besides, she IS getting classical training, and sounds pretty decent, so I don't get why people always say that the woman can't sing for crap. @jharmo2 Surprisingly, it's not. In a film about actors with good voices dubbing actors with the wrong voices, it's ironic that a lot of Debbie Reynolds'? speaking wasn't her voice at all - it was Jean Hagen dubbing her! You can tell which parts are Debbie's real voice by whether or not it's got a Western twang to it.
