The impressive part is not it filtering through the information. Its the fact that the questions aren't typed into? it but that it understand natural spoken language. Look at something like Siri on the iphone. Its pretty cool but doens't understand what I am saying about 75% of the time. Watson would be right about 99% of the time. Of course its more expensive and a lot larger than an iphone :)

I still dont get it, its a computer its only as smart as the information that it was programmed to contain, its RAM is limited. As? far as I know the human brain has an unlimited capacity for information. Therefore, the computer, with its smaller capacity would have a simpler time filtering through its information, while a human would obviously take a bit longer to filter through his/her larger capacity of information.

It is pure luck when it comes down to it, if you have 2 evenly matched opponents. You can compare a computer almost directly with a human. For instance human memory = computer ram, a computer processor does almost the same thing as a human brain(at least as far as we know). This is still a challenge for the enormous processing capacity behind Watson, and it's more of a research project into information processing than a competition.

Watson also teaches himself the knowledge...it is NOT programmed into him. He has hundreds of nodes which give competing choices and he chooses 1 n usually the right one.? The computer is following only the instructions. for example, the programmers wrote to the computer, like, for? example, if the computer is supposed to find out whether toronto is a us or canadadian city, it will look up in it's database, etc, go through all the algorithms it was given by the people who created the computer. Nope, no computer will ever be able to overcome the chinese room argument, computers? are by definition machines that perform operations on data according to an algorithm - regardless of that algorithm's complexity. In a sense, however, human brains don't overcome it either. Our brains' operate in the same manner, DNA is our algorithm and sensory input is our data set. Sure, the brain adapts to data, but programs can be written that do this also. Imho, the chinese room argument is moot.

@ozzytonygeezerbill? linux applications just work on OS X with fink, and Linux isn't based on Unix. from OS X to linux is a little harder but headless applications are quite easy to port to Linux, anything with GUI gets difficult but also isn't impossible (like going from Native-OS X to Windows) and Linux isn't a unix or unix based, it's unix-like.

Actually, the answer to the biology question is wrong too. The LIQUID that "cushions" the nucleus is the? cytosol, not the cytoplasm. The cytoplasm is the cytosol plus non-liquid parts such as mitochondria, lysosomes, ribosomes, cytoskeletal elements, proteins, and so on. If the question asked for the LIQUID, the answer would be cytosol, not cytoplasm. A fluid is either a gas or a liquid, so even expanded it to fluid instead of liquid doesn't change the fact that cytosol is the better answer

Yes, I agree. But here's the rub. In the? video editing world, professional resolutions are moving to ULTRA HD (2K/4K). People will keep pushing the boundaries of technology. HD 3D= double processing power because essentially there are TWO images to render per frame set. I can guarantee you with the advent of 3D and the emergence of holographics in the tech world, and the increasing relevance tech plays in everyday life, people will demand more processing speed ad infinitum. kp

Old school laptops (or the massive computers if you want to go that far back) may have only had...? 512kb of RAM, as opposed to 4-8GB we have now, an increase of 7812-15625 times as much. That's what the guys 20 years ago thought. Now we have 1GB of RAM in our phones. We will find a way. Back then all you need for an OS was dots/command line. Of course one would NEVER need 512MB/1GB for that kind of computing. RAM on a machine like that would be overkill. Now we have fancy GUI's.? More computing power is necessary for such GUI's/apps. In the future GUI's could evolve into something infinitely more complex. kp

All of what you have said is true. Thank you for informing me this was a one time event. It certainly helps me look at? this in a more positive light! Also i'd like to add its an interesting view by saying the audience is cheering for the designers, which could be true. What I see wrong with cheering for a machine (and not knowing that the praise was for the designers - until now) is that the hours taken by humans to learn versus uploading the info which only needs a command

I don't see what's wrong with cheering for a machine, it's just cheering for the designers by proxy. The host treating Watson as a person makes the whole thing more fun - it's not that unusual for humans to anphropomorphise non-humans. This was clearly a one-off event to test the technology and Jeapardy won't be admitting any more AIs. As for human interaction, there's actually MORE of it? now than in the past thanks to social networking.

Now, lets look at Watson from an empathetic and humanistic perspective: It made me sad as hell when the camera focused on it like it was real person. Granted the audience claps when a contestant gets a daily double or wins a round - but cheering for the robot, not ok in my book. Third, this game show is for people (making a? claim like that, is that segregation?). Fourth, The contestants appeared more than a bit unsettled a few times playing this computer.
